How the number is built
The structure is fixed: an initial letter (X, Y or Z), seven figures, and a closing check letter — written, for instance, as Z-7654321-B. The Policía Nacional issues it, and once granted it stays attached to you permanently. Leave Spain for a decade and return, and the same number is still yours.
EU, EEA and Swiss nationals see the number printed on a green registration document — either an A4 certificate or a wallet-sized green card. For non-EU residents, the same number appears on the TIE card instead.
In Bilbao, the NIE unlocks the ability to:
- Sign a payroll contract or set yourself up as an autónomo
- Open an account with a Bizkaia bank
- Purchase, sell or lease property and put utilities in your name
- Declare tax and draw a salary in Spain
- Incorporate a company or be appointed a director
- Register a vehicle and convert a foreign driving licence
- Enrol in social security and the public health network
- Accept an inheritance or execute a notarial deed
- Arrange a mortgage or finance a purchase
- Place children in a Bilbao school or sign with a university
- Activate broadband, mobile lines and recurring subscriptions
